Why Can’t I Equalize? (And Why It’s Probably Not Your Fault)

One of the most common things I hear from students is:
“I think my ears just don’t work.”
Usually after a few failed attempts, they start believing they’re somehow bad at freediving.
But here’s the good news.
Most people can learn to equalize.
The problem is rarely the ears themselves.
The problem is usually that nobody has properly taught them how.
The Biggest Myth About Equalization
Many beginners think equalization should feel natural.
As if one day they’ll simply “get it.”
Unfortunately, that’s not how it works.
Equalization is a skill.
Just like riding a bicycle.
Just like floating.
Just like learning a new language.
Some people discover it quickly.
Others need more guidance and practice.
Neither means you’re a better or worse freediver.
You’re Probably Trying Too Late
A common mistake is waiting until the ears already feel pressure.
At that point, you’re already behind.
Good equalization happens before the discomfort starts.
Think of it like opening a door before it gets stuck.
It’s easier to stay ahead of the pressure than to catch up later.
Relaxation Matters More Than You Think
This surprises many students.
Equalization isn’t only about technique.
It’s also about tension.
When we’re stressed, rushing, or frustrated, the muscles around the throat and jaw often tighten.
And suddenly, something that worked perfectly on land stops working in the water.
Sometimes the solution isn’t trying harder.
It’s learning how to relax.
The ocean has a funny way of teaching that lesson.
You’re Not Broken
I’ve taught students who were convinced they would never equalize.
Some had failed previous courses.
Some had spent months watching YouTube videos.
Some believed they simply weren’t built for freediving.
And yet many of them eventually succeeded.
Not because their ears changed.
But because they finally understood what their body was actually doing.
Knowledge often removes frustration.
And frustration is sometimes the biggest obstacle of all.
Want Help With Your Equalization?
If you’re struggling with equalization, you’re not alone.
In fact, it’s one of the most common challenges we see in freediving.
That’s exactly why we created our Online Equalization Course.
Instead of guessing, copying random videos, or hoping things magically improve, you’ll learn a step-by-step approach designed to help you understand how equalization actually works.
Because once you understand the mechanics, everything becomes much less mysterious.
And often, much less frustrating.
Your ears may not be the problem.
You might simply need a better map.
And we’re happy to help you find it.
